about

Tim Hardin was such a big influence on me creatively in the mid sixties. His lyrical economy and musical balance…just the sheer simplicity and beauty of his songs was so appealing. At the time he was sometimes compared to Bob Dylan. Although their styles were a stark contrast to each other, they each emerged from the Greenwich Village scene and brought a fresh approach to folk music. Unfortunately Tim’s substance abuse problems crippled him and obviously disrupting the creative process. This led to his untimely death at age 39.

When our band, Gandalf, was signed to Koppelman & Rubin in 1968, I had only written a few original songs. I picked three unlikely Hardin songs to cover. I wanted to do Hardin like the Byrds did Dylan, with a folk-rock approach (a daunting challenge…what was I thinking?). Never Too Far, Hang On To A Dream, and You Upset The Grace Of Living are three of my favorites to this day.

A few years back, while visiting my friend and co-writer Jack McMahon in Oregon, we paid our respects at Tim's resting place. Jack picked some fresh roses from his garden and I threw my Martin 00-18 in the backseat. We picked up his friend, Michael Kearsey, who was also a big Tim Hardin fan, and set off for Twin Oaks. It was a somber and moving experience, and we later wrote this song based on that visit.

lyrics

Geese flying north ‘cross a grey October sky
Twin Oaks in a foggy dawn
we journeyed southward from Portland on I-5
Misty Roses on a Stone

An old guitar in the backseat of a car
muse and mem’ries here and gone
we sang your songs yes they’re still alive
Misty Roses on a Stone

(BRIDGE) In the midst of that Greenwich Village scene
crossing over the line
mumbling stumbling hanging on to a dream
slowly vanishing in time

(INSTRUMENTAL)

(BRIDGE) you left your soul and your poetry
pressed in vinyl on a shelf
robbed of your pride and your honesty
no one could save you from yourself

And so we bring this simple gift today
after all you’re not alone
fresh from a garden to the place where you lay
Misty Roses on a Stone
